A Willow-y Delight: Why Our Flock Loves This Natural Treat (2026#5)

There is something truly magical about the moment we bring willow branches into the field. The excitement is palpable, a chorus of happy bleats followed by the rhythmic sound of crunching as our flock eagerly dives into their morning treat.

We are lucky enough to have three types of willow on our land: the elegant weeping willow, the sturdy knot willow, and the versatile crack willow (or brittle willow). While they are all enjoyed, the knot willow remains the undisputed favourite among our residents.

More Than Just a Snack

Beyond the sheer joy it brings, willow is actually quite beneficial for sheep. There has been ongoing interest and research into the medicinal properties of willow. It contains salicin, a compound that acts similarly to aspirin and can have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects.

While we treat our flock to these branches primarily as a healthy, natural enrichment, a "superfood" snack they don't get too often, it is fascinating to know that their ancestral instincts for foraging often guide them toward plants that support their health.

As with everything, moderation is key. We view these willow sessions as a special occasion, a way to bond with the flock and provide them with natural variety beyond their daily grass intake.
